New information has emerged regarding a major plan to develop regional Australia, aimed at alleviating congestion and the high cost of living in the country’s capital cities.

According to the ‘2026 Regional Population Planning’ report released by the Regional Australia Institute (RAI), the population in regional areas could increase by approximately 6.2 million by 2050, provided adequate transport and infrastructure are established. This figure represents a rate more than 2.5 times higher than the current national population growth rate.

Regional Development to Ease Pressure on Major Cities

Australia’s population is projected to grow by another 13.4 million over the next 40 years. The government estimates that 80% of this growth will be concentrated in major cities.

However, Liz Ritchie, CEO of the RAI, argues that this does not have to be the case.

With a proper national development plan in place, it is possible to settle between 38% and 45% of Australia’s population in regional areas by 2050.

This would significantly alleviate the housing crisis and the strain on infrastructure currently facing cities like Sydney and Melbourne.

Migration and Job Opportunities

Although 36.3% of Australia’s current population resides in regional areas, only a small fraction—around 17%—of overseas migrants arriving in 2024–2025 have settled in these regions.

Nevertheless, overseas migrants have contributed to 46.2% of regional population growth. Professionals aged between 25 and 44, in particular, have been migrating to these regional areas.

This trend helps address critical labor shortages in sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering, skilled trades, agriculture, and hospitality.

The arrival of young migrants provides a significant boost in preventing economic decline caused by aging populations and labor shortages in certain regional areas.
