The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the leading and largest state universities in Sri Lanka. It is situated on a beautiful site spread over several acres in the Gangodawila area of Nugegoda, not far from Colombo.
The history of the university dates back to the historic Vidyodaya Pirivena, founded in 1873 by Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero. Later, it was officially established as the “Vidyodaya University” on 16 February 1959 by the Universities Act No. 45 of 1958. Its first Vice-Chancellor was Venerable Welivitiye Soratha Thero. It was reformed as the “University of Sri Jayewardenepura” under the new Universities Act enacted in 1978.
Currently, the university has 11 faculties including Management and Commerce, Humanities and Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medicine, Engineering and Technology. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student population, with an internal student population of over 15,000.
