How WHT Works on FDs

When your fixed deposit earns interest, your bank automatically deducts 5% Withholding Tax (for residents) before crediting the net amount. They issue a WHT certificate which you can use when filing your annual income tax return to offset against your APIT liability — avoiding double taxation.

Simple vs Compound Interest

Most Sri Lankan bank FDs use simple interest — your interest is calculated on the original principal only. A few products offer compound interest where previously earned interest is added to the principal, generating higher returns over longer periods. Always confirm with your bank which method applies.

Effective Yield After WHT

The effective yield is your real return after WHT deduction. For example, a 12% FD rate with 5% WHT gives an effective yield of approximately 11.4%. This calculator shows you both gross and net figures so you can compare products accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions — Fixed Deposits in Sri Lanka 2025/26

What is the WHT rate on Fixed Deposit interest in Sri Lanka 2025?

In Sri Lanka, Withholding Tax (WHT) on fixed deposit interest for resident individuals is 5% from January 1, 2023 onwards. Non-residents pay WHT at 15%. The WHT is deducted by the bank at source before crediting interest to your account.

How is Fixed Deposit interest calculated in Sri Lanka?

FD interest in Sri Lanka is typically calculated using simple interest: Interest = Principal × Rate × Time / 100. For compounding FDs, the compound interest formula applies: Maturity = Principal × (1 + Rate/n)^(n×t). Banks deduct WHT at 5% (residents) or 15% (non-residents) before crediting interest.

Is Fixed Deposit interest taxable in Sri Lanka?

Yes. FD interest income is subject to Withholding Tax (WHT) in Sri Lanka. Banks deduct WHT at source — 5% for resident individuals and 15% for non-residents. The WHT certificate issued by the bank can be used when filing your annual income tax return with the IRD.

Can I offset WHT paid on FD interest against my income tax?

Yes. WHT deducted on FD interest can be used to offset against your annual income tax (APIT) liability when filing your return with the IRD. The bank will provide a WHT certificate detailing the amount deducted. Keep this certificate safe for your annual tax filing.

What are the current FD interest rates in Sri Lanka 2025?

FD interest rates in Sri Lanka vary by bank and tenure. As of 2025, rates generally range from 8% to 14% per annum for LKR fixed deposits, with higher rates for longer tenures. State banks (Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank) and licensed commercial banks offer different rates. Always check directly with your bank for the latest rates.
