New education reforms from 2026 – Exams and curricula will also change
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya informed Parliament today (23) that new education reforms, including syllabus and examination system, will be implemented from 2026.
The Prime Minister said that she hopes to make positive changes to the education reform proposals submitted by the previous government and present them.
The Prime Minister also said that the existing education system will be transformed in a way that is more suitable for students.
Accordingly, it is proposed to implement education reforms from 2026 with the aim of reducing competition in education, and the Prime Minister informed Parliament that steps have also been taken to revise the examination system and curricula.
“The new education reforms will revise the curriculum specifications and assessment processes.
Accordingly, we are revising the number of subjects currently studied by school students in a way that minimizes the pressure on students through the specification and assessment process. We expect to provide a practical education that is not a burden on children rather than an examination-centric system.”
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that efforts are being made to change the content of subjects such as aesthetics, information technology and accounting to be more appropriate and that these subjects are never expected to be removed.
“As we see it, these subjects should be in education. They should be included in the curriculum.”
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that at a time when the education system is being led towards a transformational change, she hopes to do so in three areas, adding that she will work with great attention to teacher training, school organization and infrastructure development, as well as school subject content.
