A human rights commission is an independent, state-sponsored or statutory body established to investigate, promote and protect human rights. In Sri Lanka, this refers specifically to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), which was established in March 1997 under the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Act No. 21 of 1996.
